10 Things to Eat Before I’m 30
No. 2: Salted Egg Yolk Crabs @ Robson Heights Seafood Restaurant
Okay, so I’m thinking I might have to expand my list to maybe 30 things to eat before I’m 30, because I keep discovering a lot of Asian food that I actually haven’t tried. I’m embarrassed to say that my many years in London has totally ‘matsaleh-fied ’me, but I’m not letting that get in the way!
Pan Mee is probably next on the list, as is Singapore Chilli Crabs. But first, I discovered that there is such a thing as Salted Egg Yolk Crabs. I know, I’ve been living under a rock!
“You’ve never tried Salted Egg Yolk Crabs?” cried boo_licious (via twitter), reacting in the same way when I told her I’d never tried Bak Kut Teh. I shamefully admitted to having not.
“Ok, ok,” she replies. “We must fix this – lunch on Saturday?” “Okie dokie!” I replied. Ahh, to have friends like this… wonderful.
Boo (as she’s affectionately known) to me, is the vault of places to eat in KL. We didn’t have a lot of time to spare that Saturday due to previous appointments, so she suggested Robson Heights Seafood Restaurant, which was close to home.

Splashie Boy and her were so efficient, they had ordered by the time we got there, which I was very grateful for. I never know how to order in Chinese/Seafood places. My vocabulary extends as far as ‘Kam Heong’ style, and Kai Lan, which incidentally, she had actually ordered. We started off with braised peanuts and Chinese tea.

The lunchtime conversation was dominated by where to eat, what to eat, and the fact that Western Seafood places never do as well as seafood places like the one we were in.

Us Malaysians, we like getting down and dirty with our crabs (that sounded wrong) and we like to get our fingers sticky peeling of shells of prawns and sucking on La la. Well, I know I definitely do…
I was expecting a thick, creamy sauce similar to Butter Crabs. The Salted Egg Yolk Crabs arrived and it was dry, with a coating of, yes, salted egg yolk.

I’m assuming they had been deep fried or shallow fried in very hot oil to get that even golden brown glisten, and I picked up a body and began peeling.

Yum! The batter had a slight powdery texture and was extremely savoury! Yum. I move on to a claw, which was very meaty and juicy. Then back to a body, and back to a claw…
Anyone who’s eaten crabs knows that it takes time. We also had Butter Squid.

The squid was tasty, and fresh, lightly coated in a stringy butter and flour batter.

We had a very large portion of Cantonese style Noodles, with prawns and vegetables in a thick, eggy sauce.

The Stir Fried Kai Lan with garlic was excellent, very crispy and green.

Boo asked me if I wanted to try another style of crab and I shamelessly said YES! Shortly after, the Kam Heong style crabs arrived.

They looked great, and were very fresh but I found it had a very strong flavor of black bean that overpowered everything else. The claws were large, and contained very sweet, succulent meat.

It was also lacking a little kick, not very spicy but tasty. Not the best I’ve had, but the crab itself was above average.

Overall, I can tick off item number 2 on the list of 10 (or 30) things to eat before I’m 30. Salted Egg Yolk Crabs, DONE.

They also have live giant-sized frogs, and fresh fish straight from the tank.

For good seafood in a convenient location, try Robson Heights Seafood Restaurant, bordering on Taman Seputeh.

What’s next? Pan Mee or Singapore Chiili Crabs, whichever comes first…
