Bruno’s @ Jaya 33

A couple of weeks ago, I received an email that went a little something like this:

Dear Aly,

Bruno’s at Jaya 33 will be hosting a little merry making soiree on the evening of 29th Oct (Thurs). We’ve recently undergone a rebranding – centering the restaurant now on the lifestyle dining concept with good food, affordable drinks, good live music gigs and a place to unwind.

etc etc… for and on behalf of Bruno’s,

Candy Moy

I skipped to the end and replied YES immediately. That Thursday evening I had the pleasure of being joined by Ciki of the infamous Cumi & Ciki, the ever entertaining alilfatmonkey and meeting the legendary fatboybakes for the first time.

” Do I call you Mr Bakes or…” I stammered as I shook his hand.

“Mr Fat Boy!” screamed Ciki, bursting into laughter. What a table we made!

Starting off with a round of Guiness on draft, we were served Bruno’s Sauteed Mushrooms. Large White Button Mushrooms Sauteed in Herb Butter and glazed with Oyster Sauce. These were moorish, and went down very easily. Monkey took charge and ordered us an extra plate.

Alternatively, you can get some crunch from Bruno’s Breaded Mushrooms. Button Mushrooms coated in Bruno’s special batter, and deep fried till golden brown. What do you think Monkey did?

Breaded Mushrooms

You guessed it. He ordered us another plate. I like this boy’s thinking. Great to wash down with a pint of lager or a glass of Bruno’s recommended wine.

I found Bruno’s Black Olive and Orange Salad tasty, but on the bitter side, possibly from the canned oranges. I did enjoy the kick from the Paprika Dressing, which added an interesting twist.

Of course, me being me and confusing Jaya 33 with Jaya One, I turned up late, and flustered and didn’t quite pay attention to what everyone else had already ordered for mains. I thought Hmm, I feel like Ribs….

It was only when our dishes arrived did I realize that I’d ordered the same thing as Monkey. Whoopsie!

Red WIne Ribs

Oh well, there was a double potion of Bruno’s Red Wine Spare Ribs, and it didn’t go to waste.

* A little info on Pork: It can be either very fatty or very lean.

Pork loin is cut of meat from a pig, along the top of the rib cage and is very lean. It also has a tendency to be very dry purely because of the texture of the meat, but it is very healthy and also known as ‘the other white meat’.

If you’re watching your weight and want to enjoy a simple yet tasty dish, the Roast Pork with Chardonnay and Thyme Sauce that fatboybakes ordered, is perfect. Very lean meat, with a side of Pasta Alfredo and Garden Salad for RM 48. I guess if you’re on a budget you could skip the starter as this is a complete meal in itself.

Protein + Carbs + Greens = BALANCED DINNER.

Ciki ordered Bruno’s Sirloin Maison. Again, a nice, balanced meal. reasonably priced at RM 58.

Sirloin

We almost moved on to dessert, but held it off as the other half of Ciki, (Cumi) arrived. He had a hearty portion of Bruno’s Paprika and Red Wine Lamb Shank, and washed it all down with a tall cool glass of Heineken. ….

LAMB

Candy came over to find out how we were enjoying the meal. She recommended some desserts and fatboybakes took the opportunity to grab a photo with her.

Dessert

Satisfy your sweet tooth with the delicate Panna Cotta or a surprise from the Food Foundry; the famous Vanilla Mille Crepe Cake dusted with confectioners’ sugar. Rich, buttery and more savoury then sweet, it was light and fluffy and definitely something I would have again.

Dessert was tasty, and it between bites and ‘monkeying’ around Ciki and Monkey found the time to devise a sneaky plan for a contest, which is happening as you read this!

Fun fun fun

To take part before the weekend is over, click here and here!

Adjourning to the ‘verandah’, or patio, or whatever you want to call it (the outdoor area adjascent to the main road) we relaxed to soothing sounds of the band for the evening. A soft mix of jazz, blues, rock and roll… a little bit of everything, and a lot of whatever you wanted to hear.

OUTDOOR

Enjoying our after dinner drinks and taking in the ‘fresh’ KL air, it was surprisingly quiet and peaceful. Bruno’s is a great place to unwind, a great place to catch up with old friends or to meet new ones. Dance the night away or sit back and relax with a mojito… Whatever you decide to do, make sure you have the ribs…
